NoseFlow help

How to set up NoseFlow and get reliable prompts.

NoseFlow watches mouth position on your Mac and notifies you when it looks like you are mouth breathing, so you can close your mouth and breathe through your nose. It is a habit cue, not a medical device.

Getting started

A few minutes of setup.

  1. Download NoseFlow from the Mac App Store and open it.
  2. Allow camera and notification permissions when macOS asks.
  3. Sit where you normally work, with your face clearly visible and lighting that is not too dark.
  4. Close your mouth, relax your face, and complete calibration.
  5. Set a check interval from the nose icon in the top right of the app window.
  6. Minimize NoseFlow or switch to another window. It continues in the background.

If your head angle or lighting changes a lot, recalibrate from the same nose icon.

Permissions

Camera and notifications have to be on.

NoseFlow needs the camera to measure mouth position, and notifications to prompt you. Nothing is uploaded. If you previously declined access, turn it back on in macOS:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Under Camera, enable NoseFlow.
  4. Under Notifications, enable NoseFlow and allow banners or alerts.

If the live camera view is black, the camera is in use by another app or Camera access is still off.

Calibration

Calibrate in the posture you actually work in.

People sit at different distances and angles. Calibration sets a closed-mouth baseline for your usual posture so alerts are less noisy.

  1. Face the camera. Your whole face should be in frame.
  2. Use the lighting you normally work in. Avoid strong backlight and very dark rooms.
  3. Close your mouth and keep a relaxed expression.
  4. Run calibration, then stay in a similar sitting position while you work.

Recalibrate after you change desks, chairs, camera height, or lighting.

Monitoring

Work as normal. Get nudged when your mouth opens.

How checks work

Vision analysis runs on your Mac. Camera frames are used to measure mouth position. They are not uploaded.

Check interval

Choose how often NoseFlow looks at mouth position from the nose icon in the top right of the app window. A shorter interval catches more moments and can send more alerts.

Background use

Minimize the window or use other apps. NoseFlow keeps checking on your interval. Quit the app if you want monitoring to stop.

What an alert means

A notification asks you to close your mouth and breathe through your nose. It is a reminder, not a diagnosis of a breathing condition.

Troubleshooting

If alerts feel off, start here.

Too many alerts

Recalibrate with a relaxed closed mouth. Lengthen the check interval. Keep your face fully in frame and avoid talking or chewing during the first checks after calibration.

No alerts

Confirm notifications are allowed, NoseFlow is still running, and the check interval is not so long that you miss the moment. Recalibrate if you moved farther from the camera.

Camera view is blank

Quit other apps that may be using the camera, then reopen NoseFlow. Confirm Camera access in System Settings. An external camera may need to be selected as the Mac’s default camera.

Alerts after I already closed my mouth

Lighting, glasses glare, or a steep camera angle can confuse mouth position. Recalibrate, raise the camera closer to eye level, and keep your face evenly lit.

Privacy

Detection stays on your Mac.

NoseFlow uses Apple Vision on the device. It is built to watch mouth position locally, not to record or upload your camera feed. We do not need an account to use the app.

NoseFlow is not a medical product. It does not diagnose, treat, or monitor a disease or condition. If you have breathing, sleep, or health concerns, talk to a clinician.
